Valentine’s Day Writing Contest

Another writing contest put on by Susanna Leonard Hill for Valentine’s Day.

It must be 214 words or less and must be written for children, twelve and under.

The theme is about curiosity.

Here’s my Valentine’s story.

Title: Creative Kate WC 210

Kate’s mom was always busy cleaning on Saturday mornings.

“Mom, will you play with me?”

“Later, darling.”

Kate watched her mom bring the garbage outdoors.

“Mom. Where does the garbage go?”

“A truck comes by and picks up the trash bins.”

“You mean the truck has hands?”

“No, darling, there are men that drive the truck and empty our trash.”

“Oh,” said Kate, not entirely convinced. “Mom, can you play with me. I’m bored.”

“Why don’t you play with my pots and pretend you’re a cook. I have to finish the ironing.”

“Aww, okay,” Kate sighed.

Kate noticed a package of flour sitting on the counter.

She pulled out the ingredients from the fridge and set them neatly on the counter.

She was careful not to make a mess when mom walked into the room.

“Uh-oh!” thought Kate.

“Oh, my goodness, Kate! What are you doing?”

“Cookies for daddy.”

“I see. Let me help you.”

“You’re not angry mom?”

“No, dear. While I vacuum later on you can paint, would you like that?”

“Paint? Yes,” cheered Kate.

Kate’s mom placed the painting kit on the counter.

“It’s Valentine’s Day today, surprise me.”  Kate’s mom said, leaving the room.

Kate dabbed her fingers into the red paint.

Soon hearts were everywhere.

As a child, I spent my summer holidays by the swamp catching tadpoles and other creepy critters or running after wild animals. I wanted to become a veterinarian when I grew up. But destiny turned my life around - I moved to Italy, where I obtained my BS in Environmental Sciences and Territorial Management. When not working in our family-run business, I write, read, play with clay, doodle, and go on scavenger hunts in the woods, followed by my six cats.

  1. Cute ending, Eleanor! Your story reminded me of my son. He’s always asking me to play with him, but I’m always busy doing chores. Ah, I feel guilty! But we are doing a Valentine’s Day art project together when he wakes up from his nap today. I promise I’ll stay by his side so he doesn’t end up surprising me like Kate surprised her mom lol

    1. It really happened with my grandchild. His drawings were so cute I couldn’t say anything. Grandmothers!? It took him 5 minutes to create a masterpiece. Hope your project goes well today, I’m sure he’ll appreciate it.
