“I’ve figured it all out, ” said Tiny Tat.

“What?” said Arny.

“Last year, I didn’t get any hearts because they were scared of me. But after a whole year in class together, they know I’m okay.  Right?”

“Ya, you’re right,” Arny said. But he knew her classmates were still afraid of her. Those long claws and big eyes and ears would scare anyone. An aye-aye is weird. But he couldn’t tell her that. He had to figure out how to sneak a valentine’s card under her desk without her noticing.

He cut and pasted hearts all over an envelope. Then he snuck into his classroom. As he was about to deliver the envelope, his friends walked in.

“You’re not going to give Tiny Tat a card, are you?”

He stood straight and said. “You guys are mean. Just because she’s different doesn’t mean she can’t have a Valentine’s card too. She’s my friend, and friends don’t let each other down.”

Arny dropped the card on Tat’s desk.

The school bell rang. Tiny Tat strolled into the classroom. She reached under her desk, and to her surprise, there was a stack of envelopes. She turned to Arny. “See, I told you I would get a Valentine’s card this year.”

As a child, I spent my summer holidays by the swamp catching tadpoles and other creepy critters or running after wild animals. I wanted to become a veterinarian when I grew up. But destiny turned my life around - I moved to Italy, where I obtained my BS in Environmental Sciences and Territorial Management. When not working in our family-run business, I write, read, play with clay, doodle, and go on scavenger hunts in the woods, followed by my six cats.
