Four-lined snake – Cervone- Elaphe quatuorlineata

I took this shot while walking in my backyard on a rainy day?  Mating lasts from 3 to 5 hours and usually takes place in April and June.

Ho preso questa foto mentre passeggiavo dietro casa sotto la pioggia.  Gli accoppiamenti durano da 3 a 5 ore e hanno luogo in genere in aprile e giugno.

Excerpt from Orto da Coltivare – Killing snakes is not always a good choice, by doing it we deprive nature of an important link in the environmental chain and at the same time we remove a faithful ally from our crops.

The snake with its silent and surgical action can in a short time free our garden, and in some cases even a larger field, from the annoying action of rodents.

Unfortunately, my neighbors do not share my love for snakes, especially when the four-lined snake sunbathes on their terrace.

Stralcio da Orto da Coltivare– Uccidere i serpenti non è sempre una buona scelta, facendolo priviamo la natura di un importante anello della catena ambientale e al tempo stesso togliamo alle nostre coltivazioni un fedele alleato.

Il serpente con la sua silenziosa e chirurgica azione può in breve tempo liberare il nostro orticello, e in alcuni casi anche un campo più esteso, dalla fastidiosa azione dei roditori.

Purtroppo, I miei vicini non condividono il mio amore per i serpenti, specialmente quando il serpente si crogiola al sole sul loro terrazzo.

It is the longest Italian snake and one of the longest in Europe. The adult length can vary from 110 to 180 cm, although it rarely exceeds 160. It is yellowish-brown in color with the characteristic four dark longitudinal bars.

A large proportion of the snakes’ diet consists of small mammals, such as rabbits, weasels, squirrels, and mice. They also feed on birds, lizards, newly hatched tortoises and eggs.

È il più lungo serpente italiano ed uno tra i più lunghi d’Europa. La lunghezza da adulto può variare da 110 a 180 cm, anche se raramente supera i 160. È di colore bruno-giallastro con le caratteristiche quattro barre longitudinali scure

Si nutre di piccoli mammiferi (arvicole, topi, toporagni, conigli, donnole, scoiattoli ed altri fino alle dimensioni di un ratto) che soffoca tra le spire, nidiacei di uccelli fino alle dimensioni di un piccione, uova che inghiotte intere e poi rompe con i muscoli del tronco, qualche lucertola (cibo preferito soprattutto dai giovani).

The four-lined snake favors areas with a Mediterranean climate and is found in habitats featuring vegetation, stone walls, sparse woodland, forest margins and deserted buildings.

It prefers warm 24-34 ° C and humid environments. It can be found at an altitude of up to 1000 meters above sea level.

It is a species in progressive decline due to the disappearance of the habitats in which it lives, protected by the Berne Convention (App. II).

È diffuso dall’Europa sudorientale all’Asia Minore. In Italia è frequente nelle zone centro-meridionali. Predilige la macchia mediterranea, il limitare di boschi, i boschi radi e soleggiati o in genere i luoghi con vegetazione sparsa, le sassaie, i muretti a secco e gli edifici abbandonati. Ama gli ambienti caldi (24-34 °C) e umidi. Si può incontrare ad un’altitudine fino ai 1000 m sul livello del mare.

È una specie in progressivo declino per la scomparsa degli habitat in cui vive, protetta dalla Convenzione di Berna (App. II).
