Jurassic Rat’s 3rd Birthday-Il Compleanno di Jurassic Rat

When Jurassic Rat was published, I was thrilled to hold a copy in my hands. Who wouldn’t? I had marketing plans and ordered T-shirts for my publisher and editor. I had bookmarks made, stickers, and grand plans for the future. In 2019 I attended the Bologna Book Fair. I had no physical book in hand, but that didn’t stop me from talking with editors sitting at their booth trying to sell rights. I did have a galley on my phone that I had received a day earlier. I showed it to a few publishers, that responded politely, saying, “I would prefer a physical book.” Obviously!

In my contract, the publisher has worldwide rights for English. I had the rights for TV, merchandising, and publishing my book in other languages. To make a long story short, I received one email from a publisher two months later saying he loved the book, but it wasn’t a good fit.

Okay, fine, I thought. I marketed my informational picture book as best as I could using Canva. At Halloween and Christmas, I posted about Rat. But then, my daughter-in-law was very ill at the end of June. She was hospitalized for a month, and I cared for my grandchild. Tough when he thinks she’d gone on vacation without him. When is Mommy coming home? Why didn’t she bring me with her? My grandchild soon found out where she was when we visited her in hospital. But he didn’t seem to quite to understand the situation, thank goodness. He kissed his mom and ran up and down the stairs as we had coffee in the lounge.

The same year my two children got married—one in Southern Italy and the other in Sardinia. The latter I was worried about, my daughter-in-law was still dragging one foot, but she was so strong that the wedding took place. It was a God send that they could still celebrate their marriage. Therefore I stopped marketing Jurassic Rat. Family comes first.

Then in June 2020, the library booked me for a book presentation. Don’t you know it, COVID struck. Talk about bad luck. It was canceled.

In the summer of 2021, my librarian invited me to present my picture book at our small town’s book fair. I was thrilled. There weren’t many people since they were still afraid of COVID, but the presentation went well, and the children enjoyed the activities. I even sold a few books, although they were in English, and I live in Italy.

So poor little Rat never got a chance to get known.

So, I wish Jurassic Rat a Happy 3^rd Birthday.

È il compleanno di un libro, in realtà il terzo compleanno di Jurassic Rat.

Quando Jurassic Rat è stato pubblicato, ero entusiasta di tenerne una copia tra le mani. Chi non lo farebbe? Avevo piani di marketing e ordinato magliette per il mio editore. Ho fatto realizzare segnalibri, adesivi e avevo grandi progetti per il futuro. Nel 2019 ho partecipato alla Fiera del Libro di Bologna. Non avevo un libro fisico in mano, ma questo non mi ha impedito di parlare con gli editori seduti al loro stand che cercavano di vendere i diritti. Avevo una copia del mio libro sul mio telefono che avevo ricevuto il giorno prima. L’ho mostrato ad alcuni editori, che hanno risposto educatamente dicendo: “Preferirei un libro fisico”. Ovviamente!

Nel mio contratto, l’editore ha diritti mondiali per l’inglese. Avevo i diritti per la TV, il merchandising e la pubblicazione del mio libro in altre lingue. Per farla breve, due mesi dopo ho ricevuto un’e-mail da un editore in cui mi diceva che amava il libro, ma non andava bene.

Va bene, ho pensato. Ho commercializzato il mio libro illustrato informativo nel miglior modo possibile utilizzando Canva. Ad Halloween e Natale, ho postato su Rat. Ma poi mia nuora era molto malata alla fine di giugno. È stata ricoverata in ospedale per un mese e mi sono preso cura di mio nipote. Difficile quando lui pensase che era andata in vacanza senza di lui. Quando torna a casa la mamma? Perché non mi ha portato con sé? Mio nipote ha presto scoperto dove si trovava quando l’abbiamo visitata in ospedale. Ma non sembrava capire la situazione, grazie al cielo. Baciò sua madre e corse su e giù per le scale mentre prendevamo un caffè nel atrio.

Lo stesso anno i miei due figli si sono sposati, uno nel sud Italia e l’altro in Sardegna. Quest’ultimo mi preoccupava, mia nuora stava ancora trascinando un piede, ma era così forte che il matrimonio ebbe luogo. Era un segno da Dio che potessero ancora celebrare il loro matrimonio. Quindi ho smesso di commercializzare Jurassic Rat. La famiglia prima di tutto.

Poi, a giugno 2020, la biblioteca mi ha prenotato per la presentazione di un libro. Poi il COVID ha colpito. Che sfortuna. È stato cancellato.

Nell’estate del 2021, la mia bibliotecaria mi ha invitato a presentare il mio libro illustrato alla fiera del libro nella nostra piccola città. Sono rimasta basita. Non c’erano molte persone poiché avevano ancora paura del COVID, ma la presentazione è andata bene e i bambini hanno apprezzato le attività. Ho anche venduto alcuni libri, sebbene fossero in inglese, e vivo in Italia.

Così il povero piccolo Ratto non ha mai avuto la possibilità di farsi conoscere.

Quindi, auguro a Jurassic Rat un felice 3° compleanno.
